UMEAN

Privacy

The short version

UMEAN has no accounts and no ads, and it does not track you. The one thing that leaves your device is the text you paste in to be decoded, and it is used for that one read.

What you paste

When you press Decode, the notes you pasted and the instrument you picked are sent to UMEAN's server, which passes them to a third-party AI service that writes the read. UMEAN does not store your notes or the read on its server. The AI service processes the text to produce the read and may hold it for a limited time for safety and abuse monitoring under its own terms; it is not used to identify you. The first time you decode, UMEAN tells you this and asks before sending anything.

Notes from clients can contain names or other personal details. Leave out anything that does not describe the sound.

What stays on your device

Records and links

To check that a record the read names is real, UMEAN's server looks up the artist and song title in a public music catalogue. Nothing about you is sent with that lookup. Tapping a time or a link opens YouTube or Apple Music, which have their own privacy policies.

Payments

On iPhone, packs of reads are bought through the App Store; Apple handles the payment and UMEAN receives only Apple's signed confirmation of the purchase. On the web, payment is handled by Stripe; UMEAN never sees your card. If you use "I already bought reads", the email you type is checked against Stripe's receipts and is not kept by UMEAN.

Your balance of reads

The server keeps a count of the reads you have left. The count is tied to a scrambled identifier, not to your name, email or address.

Children

UMEAN is a tool for working musicians and is not directed at children under 13.
